The European Peatlands Initiative (EPI) is a collaborative network that brings together governments, organisations and other entities from across Europe to accelerate peatland conservation, restoration and sustainable management. Its governance is designed to be transparent, collaborative and efficient, ensuring that members can contribute to shaping the EPI while supporting coordinated action across Europe.
The EPI’s governance structure consists of four main elements:
General Assembly
The General Assembly brings together all members of the EPI. Meeting annually, it provides a forum for members to share knowledge, discuss priorities and shape the future direction of the EPI.
Steering Committee
The Steering Committee provides the strategic direction for the EPI and oversees the implementation of the work plan. Representing a diverse range of sectors and expertise, it helps guide the EPI’s development, supports collaboration among members and ensures that activities remain aligned with the EPI’s vision and mission, and guiding principles.
Advisory Members
The Steering Committee is supported by Advisory Members, international initiatives and organisations that provide strategic advice, technical expertise and external perspectives. Their guidance helps ensure that the EPI builds on international experience and remains connected to wider peatland initiatives.
Secretariat
The Secretariat coordinates the day-to-day management of the EPI. It supports members of the Steering Committee by coordinating activities, facilitating communication, managing projects and grants, and providing administrative and technical support. During the EPI’s first three years, the Secretariat role is carried out by Eurosite – the European Land Conservation Network.
