Through government-backed support across Europe and in collaboration with multi-stakeholder partners, the EPI aims to leverage established networks to foster momentum, facilitate knowledge sharing, promote mutual learning, and augment investment in peatland protection and restoration by forging strategic partnerships for peatlands.
By assisting projects, countries and sectors in working collaboratively, the EPI seeks to achieve the common goal of preserving valuable peatlands across Europe and playing a substantial role in global endeavours to drive action for nature, climate and people.
In pursuing its objectives, the European Peatlands Initiative aspires to draw from the experience and expertise of members and lessons learned from the UNEP-led Global Peatlands Initiative and other relevant networks.
Vision
The EPI is a strong European network uniting governments, the European Commission and stakeholders to conserve, restore and wisely use peatlands for biodiversity, clean water, sustainable livelihoods and climate resilience and neutrality.
Mission
The EPI’s mission is four-fold:
COLLABORATION: To improve pan-European cooperation on peatland-related policies between countries, sectors, projects and finance.
INNOVATION: To foster innovation, support the transition towards sustainable land use practices and access finance
KNOWLEDGE SHARING: To help national governments and the European Commission to base strategies and policies on up-to-date peatlands data and management best-practices.
COMMUNICATION: To connect governments and stakeholders to raise awareness on the essential role of peatlands.
